1. James SULLIVAN (SWEET WILSON) [image] was born on 31 Jul 1865 in Wagga Wagga NSW. He died on 31 May 1926 in Broken Hill, NSW. The cause of death was asthma and bronchitis. He was buried in Broken Hill Cemetery.

James was born as James Sullivan but grew up and married as James Sweet, the surname of his step father. In 1896/97 he deserted his wife Annie and went to Broken Hill with Mary Agnes Best. It was then they both took on the name of Wilson which they used till their deaths.
James was known as "Ironbark Jimmy" in Broken Hill
Address at time of death was 684 Beryl St Broken Hill which no longer exists

Profession listed as Tanner, Labourer, Currier on 1st marriage childrens birth certificates. A Currier is is the person who works on leather after the tanning process.

James Sweet, labourer and tanner, age 30 years, height 5ft. 8in, very slight build, fair complexion, black hair turning grey, sandy moustache (otherwise clean shaven), blue eyes, a small scar on the right side of his head, erect gait, and wore a blue serge sac suit, black hard felt hat, and has also with him a pair of grey trousers and a pair of white trousers and a vest, for deserting his wife, Annie Sweet, at Adelaide, on the 8th ultimo, offender left Adelaide for the north seeking work (C- 305)

James married (1) Annie BOTTOMLEY daughter of Thomas BOTTOMLEY and Mary on 3 Feb 1888 in Residence of Rev E G Day, Adelaide. Annie was born in 1867 in Greenough, Western Australia. She died on 7 Feb 1929 in Isolation Block, North Tce, Adelaide SA.

Her surname was also spelt BOTTOMLY

Royal Adelaide Hospital records show:
1) Ann Bottomley admitted 2 March 1886 with Granular Panis, born Western Australia, Residence Brougham Pl, in colony 10 years, arrived Annie Lisle.

2) Annie Bottomley, Res Brougham Pl, occupation brushmaker, admitted with abcess, 27 Apr 1887.

Address at time of marriage was Brougham Place, North Adelaide

James was not married (2) to Mary Agnes BEST [image] daughter of John Henry BEST and Sarah JENNINGS. Mary was born on 5 Aug 1877 in California St, Grey Ward (Adelaide). She was christened on 23 Aug 1877 in St Lukes Church, Whitmore Square, Adelaide. She died on 17 Mar 1965 in Broken Hill. She was buried in Broken Hill Cemetery.

After her husbands death Mary Agnes travelled around somewhat. she stayed with some of her children on and off for various periods. When her son Charles joined the military, Mary Agnes went to Sydney to be near him and also with her daughter May whose son was a prisoner of war with the Germans.
After the war she lived back in Broken Hill for some of the time but then she and Charles lived in Adelaide with her brother Walter Best. She also spent time with son Vern in Sydney before finally returning to Broken Hill and living out her years with her son Walter and his wife Loveday.
